My husband was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia in March 2005 at the ripe old age of 56 yrs. We were living in Wagga Wagga but have since moved to Geelong where there is more medical support for us and I have a daughter who lives close by and a son in Melbourne.
It has been a hard road to travel and our lives have been turned upside down but if I look at the positives I have met some amazing people that I would have not met otherwise. The sad part is losing my husband at such an early stage just when we were organising our retirement. I am his full time carer and find it exhausting at times but I have wonderful support from my children and my husband's family.
I try and take one day at a time and don't look too far into the future because if I did that I don't think I could cope. It's too scary. I have organised all the legal work that is required and am in the process of looking into Dementia orientated Nursing Homes for down the track and have also had assessments for my husband for respite etc. etc. I've tried to be logical about everything and I've also done quite a few Workshops through Alzheimer's Australia so I have an idea what's ahead of me.
I have also started up a Frontal Lobe Dementia Support Group here in Geelong which is quite successful. We meet once a month and also ring each other up when we need to talk to someone that knows what we're going through. It helps.
Is there anyone else who is a carer for their spouce that suffers from Frontal Lobe Dementia? I would love to hear from you.
