My Story

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Written by Bodisara

We love life and we love each other so much that even with 23 years married this June it seems only yesterday when we braved the cold weather in June in Auckland, New Zealand to be pronounced man and wife. We moved to the Gold Coast, Qld., Australia for our retirement in 1996. Then in 2000, Eugene, my husband, had his quadruple by-pass. He recovered medically but his general physique and mental faculties began to show signs for alarm. Most times he was so suspicious, irritable, unsociable and withdrawn. I did think he was picking on me all the time and everything I do or cook or say was no good. Many times I wanted to go away for good but I love the man and to leave him then would be my eternal guilt. Certainly ,the tests -brain scans and memory assessments confirmed our suspicion- Alzheimer's.
It will be 2 years this September -him-being bed-ridden, diabetic and incontinence. A drastic change in our lifestyle. We both like travelling, dancing, socializing and the good things in life within our means. But now, it is a start of my long good-byes.
I often ask myself why my husband? He is a very good man, a loving husband and a good provider. He is kind yet firm, he is loving and forgiving, he is gentle yet controlling, socially and morally disciplined. I know now that this incurable? disease is no respecter of race {he is Hungarian originally}, age, social status, gender or profession.
With the allied community health resources our government provide my taking care of him at home is manageable. So I take this challenge One Day At A Time.
