more mishaps...no rest for me

Well, I thought I had it made, the people who run the Respite Camps Ray goes to at Camp Breakaway had some extra funding so offered some of their regulars an extra weekend camp at very little cost. Wow, I was so thrilled, a couple of extra days off, some "me" time.

I should have known better. I did a little extra on Friday, like visiting a good friend for afternoon tea. Saturday I went to Ray's stroke support group's monthly meeting. We know a lot of people there and Ray meets some of the men at Scallywags. Some of the carers are very supportive so I like to go to a least every second meeting. This time I was able to stay for lunch too which was nice.

I dialled for messages when I got home to find four urgent ones, all about Mum having a fall and being taken to hospital. I rang the hostel and she wasn't back so I knew it was serious, rang the hospital and they asked me to come in to fill in some paper work so Trev and I drove over.

She has broken her right hip. At almost 91 and with severe dementia I doubt they are going to operate on her. The orthopaedic team will see her tomorrow and if they are willing to operate I will have it pinned, if not it will be bed rest for six weeks and she may never walk again!

It seems as if our incident-free times are few now. I will try to get some extra care for Ray so I am not hauling him to the hospital every day. I know at least for a while I will need to feed her and supervise her drinking etc as she will be sedated and unlikely to feed herself.

Wish me well with it all, if I am tired now this routine will be exhaustng.

Hi Suez, sorry to hear about your mum, going though the same with my aunt who is 92 they did the op from the waist down due to bad heart. Needed 3 wks in hospital is now at respite. Rehab is taking longer due to the stress on her heart, they had to get the dr in due to attack while doing exercises. I also had to monitor her in hospital as she was not eating after op. My prays and thoughts are with you in your time of need. Laurel

Mum has been in hospital for ten days now, had the operation last Monday but still not walking yet. I am hopeful that she will walk as she was such a great walker before the fall.

I have been going in every day to do Mum's lunchtime feeding. The staff are so busy, always flat out doing all they have to do so I can feed her lunch. I don't know that Ray is too pleased with the trips to the hospital and back but I did it for six weeks last September when he was in with heart problems and a chest infection. I am getting tired of the travelling etc so I hope she is back to her own facility soon.
