Companion Arrangement
(18-08-2005)
Pursuant to the Service Act ยง78, people can apply for a so-calledcompanion arrangement for the demented person.
- The person must be between the ages of 16 and 67.
- The person must be persistently unable to walk outside of their home alone due to dementia disease.
- The person will be eligible to receive 15 hours of companionship a month, and after the person has become part of such an arrangement, they can keep it, even after the age of 67 - regardless of their living situation.
- The person will be able to choose a person to be their companion themselves; however, the municipality must approve and hire the person. A person who is very close to the demented person will normally not be eligible to be hired.
- A cash subsidy will be an option, so a person can hire someone to be their companion themselves. However, the person must be responsible for the arrangement and administrate it.
- The companion arrangement does not include social worker support, only companionship to activities the person chooses themselves.
- Hours can be accumulated for a period of six months, such that up to 90 hours can be accumulated for use within one single month.
- It is also possible, per agreement with your municipality, to accumulate the cash subsidy for a period of six months.
- There are special regulations for the companion's transportation expenses - ask your muncipality.
- The municipality must ensure that the companion selected by the demented person receives an introduction to the job as a companion.
