Anxiety and Fear
(18-08-2005)
Regardless of whether you suspect there is something wrong with your loved one or not, it comes as a shock when they are diagnosed with dementia. The anxiety about the future and the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. Although you may gain control of this emotional turmoil, it will recur at times when new critical situations arise related to the progression of the dementia.
As a relative of a person with dementia, you have a dual function; one that relates to yourself and one relating to your relative with dementia.
Sometimes it may help to talk with the affected person about how you feel. Sometimes this is not appropriate and it is better to talk with other relatives/friends or professionals about your emotions and struggles.
Remember to:
- Listen to the person with dementia to gain an understanding and insight into their thoughts and feelings.
- Talk with other family members or close friends about your feelings of anxiety and fear.
