Future Medication
(24-08-2005)
Several different types of medication are being developed to treat Alzheimer's disease. Most new types of treatment try to treat the disease process itself, not just the symptoms.
Vaccination for Alzheimer's Disease
Tests on animals have demonstrated that it is possible to vaccinate against beta-amyloid deposits in the brain. Consequently, a large study was done with vaccinations of patients. Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to adverse events. New vaccines are being developed.
Secretory inhibitors and protein deposit inhibitors
New types of treatments are being developed that will prevent beta-amyloid from either being created or deposited in the brain. The first studies with patients have begun in the USA.
