Alzheimer's Medication
(25-08-2005)
Two types of medication are used for Alzheimer's disease treatment:
- Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, which are medications that act on the brain's signal system with acetylcholine and
- NMDA receptor antagonists, which are medications that act on the brain's signal system with glutamate.
Some patients will show marked improvement with treatment, while in others the effect will be evident by their condition stabilizing or by the symptoms spreading a little less rapidly. In the instances where a person does not improve with treatment, but in which their condition stabilizes, it may be hard to see the effect immediately. In these instances, the effect of the medication will not be evident until there is a break in the treatment.
Choice of Medication
The choice of medication depends on the severity of the disease. In some cases a combination of medications is used. Please speak to your doctor about this.
