Treatment
(10-12-2009)
The treatment, as with other chronic diseases, consists of:
Medication
There is no specific medication for vascular dementia. If the brain scan shows signs of blood clots, a preventive ‘anticlotting’ treatment may be beneficial.
There are several different types of anticlotting agents. Aspirin is the most common of these. The choice of medication depends on the cause of the blood clot and the course of the illness. Discuss which treatment will be beneficial with the doctor who made the diagnosis.
People with behavioural disorders or psychiatric symptoms may occasionally benefit from other types of medication. It could be medication for depression, for example.
Studies have also been done on whether anti-dementia medication approved for Alzheimer's disease could also be beneficial for vascular dementia. If the dementia is due to a mixture of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, it is possible to use the Alzheimer's medication to treat that part of the disease.
