Causes

At least 100 different diseases can cause dementia. The disease that most often causes dementia is Alzheimer's disease.

Other common types are dementia due to blood clots (vascular dementia ), Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLBs) and frontal lobe dementia (also called frontotemporal dementia ). There are also a large number of rarer causes of dementia.

All demented people can be treated, and certain rarer forms can be cured.

The course of dementia depends entirely upon the disease involved. However, most dementia diseases deteriorate over time causing increasing development of symptoms.
