Subject: dementia pugilista
My good friend has been diagnised with dementia pugilista. I have noticed that he has got more forgetful but he is not that bad yet. How long does it take before he will need to be put in care? How fast will he deteriorate? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your question.
This is a uncommon diagnosis and the literature is quite sparse. His prognosis depends on many factors. Has he got other medical conditions that might affect his brain? Does he receive any futher injuries to his brain e.g. falls. Does he require medications that might effect his brain function?
If your friend has attended his local Alzheimer's Association they might be willing to provide more individualised advice. Similiarly your friend might be willing to discuss his prognosis with you and his doctor.
