Is this the next stage?

For the past 2 days my mum has been quite out of sorts.

All of her words are now confused and half the time she doesn't make very much sense at all. She has become quite droswy and very unsteady on her feet.

The carers told me today that at one stage today she couldn't sit up straight in the chair and tipped her cup of tea all over herself.

She is still constantly asking about when she's going to get out, except now all her words are jumbled.

Normally I read the crossword to her and she can answer most of the questions but tonight she was struggling to understand the questions.

Is this the next stage in this awful disease?

Carey, we were told at dementia support group that before you said they had had another TIA or "reached the next stage of dementia" it was always good to rule out infections of all kinds.

According to our mentor who is a trained nurse, infections and high temperatures can cause what seems like confusion, drowsiness and even a kind of stumbling walk. Think of ear infections, upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infection, sometimes even constipation, and if all of them are eliminated then look for further TIAs etc.

If it is a TIA it may resolve itself and she will get stronger. If the staff don't know what has happened I guess they will call her doctor in. I know with my mum they do it by observation rather than blood tests etc as she gets really agitated if they try to take blood.

I hope it all clears up soon and you have your mum back to where she can work with you on the crossword puzzles again.

Sue.
